Twinkle Sews by Wenlan Chia

Firstly, let me just say that I love this book, however it definitely is not a sewing book for beginners. Although the author does take you through a few sewing techniques at the beginning of the book I would say that you would need a bit of sewing experience under your belt before attempting these patterns. However if you know what you're doing with a sewing machine this is a fantastic book. The patterns are soooooooo gorgeous with lots of details that scream 'designer' rather than 'home-sewn'. There are lots of origami type details and the patterns suit a broad range of age-groups. I will let the pictures speak for themselves:

Sorry about the crud photos - I do try my best!

All the garments are styled and modelled, which I love! How awesome are these clothes?

Now for the downside.

The patterns are all on a disk which you have to print out. If you have ever purchased a pattern from Burdastyle it is the same kind of deal. The only pattern I have printed is the origami blouse (above, right) and it took a LOT of paper and having to stick it all together was tedious to say the least. Hopefully if there is a follow-up book (and I hope that there will be) paper patterns will be included.

The verdict - BUY THIS BOOK you won't regret it! But buy a couple of reams of paper and an ink cartridge at the same time :)

  2. Looking forward to seeing your creation. My sister had the same complaint about the book - all that time spent piecing the pattern together not to mention the paper it took to do it.

By the way, happy wedding anniversary. Hope your day was special!

  3. I've had the book for getting on for a year now and have yet to attempt anything! It's pretty daunting but I should really be brave I suppose, I'm quite keen to try the top on the left in your bottom photo. One thing that I did notice with printing the patterns is that the .pdf is sized for US letter which means if you print it off on A4 you may have to either deal with your printer shrinking it to fit or gaps where hasn't printed (horizontally). You can get around that if you can access the Illustrator file but it's annoying. I haven't tested this out in practical terms though, would be interesting to know what difference it makes to the sizing.
